Echo Bay Day One
We arrived at Pierre's Echo Bay Marina about 12:30PM Thursday July 19th. The docks were basically full. When I called in to get my slip assignment they ask if would like to stay on the docks on the "Cliffside" of the bay. There is no power on these docks and you must use your tender to go to the store and the dinner site. I curtly said "NO" and they found me a place in the back of the main moorage that was 100 feet from a power source. They dragged out two fifty foot 30 amp cables from a power panel and I connected an adapter that converted the two 30A 120VAC sources into a 50A 240VAC source. Then there was another 50 foot cable to the boat. When the dock helper turned on the two 30A breakers at the main panel smoke began to come out the 50A converter box. Not a good sign!
At that point I decided that we would not need power and fired up the generator. After inspecting the 50A plug on the adapter I discovered that at some point it had been full of salt water witch had dried and form a nice path for an arc. This adapter came with the boat and this is the first time I had tried to use it. Now I have something to fix. It will be a good day.
There are many boats here with friends of ours and we joined six of them for a prime rib dinner last night. Lots of good stories. Today we will move to a better spot that has 50A power. The Tacoma Yacht Club has 18 boats here and they are leaving this morning.
